The downside is the top hammer drill requires frequent parts replacement over time because the stress applied rapidly increases wear and tear.
DTH drills are mechanically superior from an efficiency standpoint when compared to the top drilling counterpart. The top hammer drilling approach achieves a consistent performance, making it the perfect choice for productive drilling at extremely low levels.
In determining whether or not one drilling method makes sense over another method, you can prioritize your goals. If consistency is the primary objective, then the hydraulic-powered top hammer is better suited.
