Powered by pressurized air, down-the-hole drilling is a more efficient approach. The rate of this method is much slower. As the depth increases, the performance degrades. The top hammer drilling relies on hydraulic energy, so its performance remains consistent regardless of the depth.
The downside is the top hammer drill requires frequent parts replacement over time because the stress applied rapidly increases wear and tear.
